Final chapter in history of Abersychan libarary as closure draws near

ABERSYCHAN library will controversially shut its doors for good in just a matter of weeks following Torfaen council’s decision to axe it.

Last week Nicola Leek from Talywain presented a 707-name petition to councillors and pleaded for further public consultation.

Despite this, and an appeal from MP Paul Murphy, as reported in the Free Press, councillors voted to close it.

The decision comes into force on April 1.

Mrs Leek said: “It’s all excuses – if people are not attending they’ve got to improve the publicity and tell people what useful services are available on their doorstep such as the children’s storytime and IT services.”

The closure is one measure to help save around £114,000 from the leisure, libraries and arts service.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT...

Torfaen council is suggesting the mobile library parks in the car park next to the Spar on High Street, Abersychan.

It has proposed this will work on a three-week rota, visiting the village on different days each week.

It is expected to visit Abersychan for an average of seven hours a week.

For other library services, residents will have to travel to the Blaenavon and Pontypool libraries.
