Public meeting over the future of Twmbarlwm

A PUBLIC meeting will be held tonight (Wednesday February 22) to discuss protecting and conserving the landscape heritage on Twmbarlwm and Mynydd Maen.

The meeting which has been organised by Cymdeithas Twmbarlwm Society will take place at Crosskeys RFC, Pandy Park from 7pm to 9.30pm.

In the eighteen months since the society was established, members have fought to secure the protection and conservation of Gwent's most distinctive landmark.

Maintenance works on the Scheduled Ancient Monument and the creation of a new public car park by Caerphilly County Borough Council are now imminent but the threats to the landmark and its surrounding common land from erosion and illegal off-roading are still cause for concern for the society.

There will be presentations by representatives of the local authorities followed by a panel discussion and a question and answer session.

The meeting will seek to raise awareness about the issues concerning Twmbarlwm and outline strategies being developed to address the problem of protecting a historically important upland area for future generations.

Rob Southall, the society's founder and current secretary said: "Our landscape and history are under threat. We must address this issue now as it may be our last chance to protect a national treasure before it is lost forever."

The evening will be presented in conjunction with Caerphilly County Borough Council, Torfaen County Borough Council, Heddlu Gwent Police and the Ancient Cwmbran Society.

Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.
