Caldicot Town can still win title says boss

9:55am Thursday 11th March 2010

CALDICOT Town AFC manager Simon Wetter has refused to let his team get ahead of themselves despite securing a vital three points away at Bryntirion on Saturday in Division One.

Gareth Cullimore grabbed the winner which meant that Caldicot closed the gap to table-toppers Goytre United to eight points, with Caldicot having two games in hand. Goytre, meanwhile, lost their first league game of the season going down 4-1 to Taffs Well.

“We’ve still got some catching up to do, Goytre have been consistently good all year. But we aren’t going to give up hope that we can catch them at the top of the table.”, said Wetter.

Wetter, however, found it difficult to hide his happiness following the team’s impressive victory against “Bryn” on Saturday afternoon.

“I was really impressed with how the boys applied themselves and the performance they put in. Bryntirion Athletic were tough opposition. They had a few very good players but we still applied ourselves and turned out a great result.”

The defeat of Bryntirion stretched the Town’s run of unbeaten games away from Jubilee Way to six games and with the team being in such form as this there are heightened expectations that the team could yet catch and overhaul Goytre at the top of Division One.

“All we can do is keeping winning the games that we have ahead of us. If we don’t then the title race will be dead because Goytre will wrap the title up,” said Wetter.

However Caldicot Town now have an opportunity to make ground on the table toppers as they first face 13th-placed West End on Saturday and then 17th-placed Ely Rangers next Tuesday evening, both away from home.

“There’s no doubt that we have an opportunity to close the gap. Ely Rangers is one of our games in hand, so in a way it is a must-win game for us,” commented Wetter.

The one stumbling block for Caldicot could be that Wetter and his co-manager, Jason Pritchard, appear to facing a mounting injury list among the first team squad.

“On Saturday, we had Andrew Wendall go off injured. I’m not quite sure how long he will be missing and then I don’t think our captain Gareth Hayward is going to be available for Saturday’s game as he has work commitments.

“However, on the positive side I think we will get Jacob Guy back from injury for the first time this year.”
