Blaenavon lose out to Cardiff Quins
12:55pm Wednesday 25th January 2012
Cardiff Quins 22 Blaenavon 10 Blaenavon outside half James Davies was not fit so Lloyd Parker took at short notice and played well. With a shortage of backs Lenny Woodard helped out on one wing with new signing Ryan Basham on the other.
Gareth Groves played well out of position at full back. Parker kicked the conversion from the touchline after number 8 Steve Howard received the scoring pass from scrum half Gareth Betts.
With 5 minutes before half time Cardiff Quins took play into the Blaenavon 25.
Good defence by Blaenavon and counter attacking forced the play back into the Quins half and they gave away a penalty. Parker was on target with the kick to increase the lead to 10 points.
Second row Jamie Ireland picked up a back injury and was replaced by Dorian Townsend and as half time approached Quins took play up to the Blaenavon line and scored a converted try.
The referee issued a harsh yellow card to flanker Lee Wright for not rolling away at a ruck and Blaenavon started the second half with 14 players. Blaenavon tight head Lee Baker injured a hamstring and was replaced by future Pontypool prospect Josh Faletau.
Lee Wright was replaced by Jo Cook then with twenty minutes gone Marc Watkins took over at loose head.
At this point Blaenavon were playing some of their best rugby of the game with forwards and backs running and passing well. But the Quins scored another two tries in the second half. They kept up the pressure on Blaenavon and were worthy winners at the final whistle. Next Saturday Blaenavon play Oakdale at the Recreation ground.
